Former Arsenal player Paul Merson says Jack Wilshere needs to move away from the club to play more often

Wilshere’s contract at Arsenal expires in the summer of 2018

Paul Merson has suggested Jack Wilshere should cut his losses and move away from Arsenal to help his career.

Wilshere, who has been with the Gunners since he joined their academy aged nine, has made only four Premier League appearances this season.

The England international showed plenty of promise as a young player but has had his career blighted by a string of injuries.

But Merson, who served as an Arsenal player for twelve years has said on talkSPORT’s Drive show that Wilshere’s days at the north London club could be numbered if he can’t secure a spot in the first team this season.

Merson said: “I think he has to leave anyway. I think come January he must sit on that bench and look at that midfield and think ‘how do I not play in this team?’

“For me he has to leave and if he leaves he’s got to go somewhere he’s going to play.”

Wilshere played in Arsenal’s 6-0 battering of BATE Borisov in matchday six of the Europa League group stage and got himself on the scoresheet, his first goal of the season.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth, where he made 27 appearances.
