Henderson was an unused substitute as Liverpool ran riot against CSKA Moscow in their final Champions League group game, winning 7-0.
Emre Can took the England international’s starting spot and he played the full 90 minutes as the Reds secured their place in the last 16 of the competition.
It remains to be seen whether Henderson will return to the fold for Liverpool’s derby with Merseyside rivals Everton on Sunday (2.15pm).
But Mills thinks Can offers more than Henderson, especially in his distribution of the ball.
“Liverpool’s front three, four, five, six, whatever you want to call it, are incredibly mobile,” Mills told Sky Sports’ The Debate Show.
“They’re very fluid with their movement.
“And I just think Can offers a little more going forward than Jordan Henderson does.
“Yes, Jordan works very very hard and he gets around the field.
“But I think Can’s use of the ball is better.”
Liverpool go into the Merseyside derby in a rich vein of form and are back in the top four for the first time since August.
