How to live longer: THREE reasons why mulled wine at Christmas could be anti-ageing

Help boost your longevity this Christmas by enjoying a warm glass of mulled wine.

The popular festive drink is likely to be consumed in gallons throughout December – which is just as well, since it may have an anti-ageing effect.

It is made from red wine mixed various spices, such as cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, and heated up before being served.

Commonly regarded as a treat to be enjoyed alongside a mince pie or three, the alcoholic drink isn’t generally thought of as being good for you.

But the good news is that a number of its components have been to be beneficial to your health – and could even help you live longer.

Here are three reasons why you shouldn’t feel guilty about a second helping. Though not the whole bottle, of course.

Red wine wards off heart disease

Mulled wine is made from red wine which comes with a number anti-ageing features, and has been found by a study to reduce risk of early death from all causes.

It is thanks to antioxidants, known as polyphenols, which have been linked to higher levels of good cholesterol and therefore reduced risk of heart disease.

One type of polyphenol is resveratrol, which has been shown by research to lower glucose levels in type 2 diabetes patients and to have a potential anti-cancer effect.

Cinnamon helps control diabetes

The spice is commonly added to mulled wine and could also help boost longevity.

It is well known for helping lower blood sugar levels, and therefore helping manage or prevent diabetes.

Like red wine, it is packed with antioxidants, which protect the body from oxidative damage that can lead to ageing.

Additionally, it triggers an anti-inflammatory effect, which can help the body fight infection and repair tissue.

Cloves could fight cancer

Originating from the flower buds of the clove tree, the spice is also regularly added to mulled wine.

It is said to have an anti-microbial effect, in particular, which means it could help boost the immune system and help digestion.

But as well as these short-term benefits, cloves are also thought to lower risk of cancer, control diabetes and preserve bone quality.
